What is Prop 65?

As a company based in California, we are subject to Prop 65, which outlines safety standards for levels of lead and other substances that could cause cancer or birth defects. It is known as the Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act, and was enacted as a ballot measure in 1986 to prevent contamination of drinking water. It only applies to California, and is not a Federal or national standard related to health or safety.

Prop 65 is a California law intended to inform California citizens about exposures to certain chemicals. It is a ‘right to know’ law, requiring companies to warn consumers when their products contain certain levels of the chemicals identified under the law. We routinely test our products and all of them meet and exceed FDA and international regulations for safety; the Prop 65 threshold levels are significantly lower than the amounts the FDA has indicated is safe for consumption. However, some herbs and spices do contain chemicals on Prop 65 list of chemicals due to naturally occurring compounds found in the soil that they are grown in. If and when a product of ours does contain chemicals above the Prop 65 threshold, we place a warning on the product page so consumers are aware ahead of their purchase.

Do I need to be worried about lead or other harmful substances in Diaspora Co. products?

No! We test each new batch of our spices for lead, microbial counts, heavy metals, and pesticide residue, and if it's not safe, we don't sell it. You can find our test results on the bottom of each spice product page if you want to see the numbers for yourself. Our products are significantly below the Provisional Total Tolerable Intake (PTTI) for lead set by the FDA; if there is lead content in a product, it is similar to the amount of lead you'd find naturally in your own body!
